Ready, Set, OCCUPY!

June 23, 2017

Well, we are officially 1 week away from the opening of the second annual Women's Theatre Festival. I must say, there have been so many wonderful people involved this year.  Ashley Popio and I are very excited that we will be kicking things off again with the Occupy the Stage Event. Part of the excitement stems around the fact that Occupy this year will open with the mainstage production of Space Girl by Mora V. Harris which we presented during last year's Occupy event. Full circle, people!!

Space Girl is actually very close to my heart. I was in the cast of the staged reading last year, playing the part of the teacher. I will tell you that I fell in love with the script in part because it was performed so brilliantly by one Nick Popio, who will be returning this year to the part of Nancy, a slightly clueless alien with an enthusiastic love of salad. I was grateful at the time that the director of our staged reading, Lorelei Lemon, had given cast mates permission to laugh at what was happening in front of us during the performance. THANK GOD!! I was literally crying with laughter. I can't wait to see this show, directed by the amazing Sisters Koop, as a fully produced play.

It is the hope of the Festival that Occupy the Stage will continue to be a feeder for the mainstage. We know that writers need a place to showcase their work, to see their words read by actors and presented to audiences in order to become fully formed and fleshed out stage-worthy pieces. Staged readings are an important step in the process of growth and creativity and we are excited to provide this opportunity to so many area authors.

Please join us this year for Occupy the Stage. If you choose to start the evening with Space Girl, your ticket will include the cost of admission to Occupy which starts immediately following the opening performance.
